Walter Massa is a bundle of energy and the genius behind the salvation of Timorasso, one of Italy’s most important indigenous white varieties. I’ve known him for more than 20 years and in that time he’s gone from struggling contadino (farmer) to a bit of a rock star with journalists, somms, importers, and a fair few Timorasso groupies turning up at his house on the square in Monleale Alto to discuss politics, food, religion and, of course, wine. Famed though he may be for Timorasso, his Barbera is also primum inter pares and this blend of high clay-content vineyards around Monleale is a concentrated, brooding example of great Barbera. Rich, smoky, with oak and black fruit melded seamlessly, this is now fully mature and rather irresistible.
