Villa Bogdano is an old-vine pioneer, crafting structured, elegant, and surprisingly ageworthy wines from the unheralded region of Lison di Portogruaro, in the north of Venezia. 185 is made from 100% Friulano planted in 1943 to a very conservative density of 2220 vines/ha. At the outset, 24 hours of cryo-maceration and soft pressing serve to combine pure fruit character with finesse. 10% is fermented in medium-toasted French oak barriques, with the mainstay in vitrified concrete tanks. For maturation, the wine spends 18 months in a mix of vitrified concrete tanks and medium-toasted French oak barriques, resting at least 3 months in bottle afterwards. The nose offers beguiling aromatic complexity, with hints of sage, mint, boxwood, scents of the Mediterranean scrub, tropical fruit, and soft vanilla. The palate has superb length and freshness, revealing warm, enveloping savoury notes, plus honey and almond. Drink through 2033.
