If you’re as old as I am you’ll remember when Verdicchio ruled the waves in villainous, amphora-shaped bottles. The 1980s craze was started by the producer, Fazi-Battaglia and, boy, how their success muddied the waters for everyone who came after. Verdicchio, if the yields are kept in check and the grapes are allowed to ripen, produces one of the world’s most delicious and ageworthy whites. But those are two big ‘ifs’. Fortunately Aldo Cifola, in the small DOC of Matelica, is all over low yields and optimal maturity.
